Lithuania misses chance to abstain

Last week Lithuania voted against the Palestinian application to join the United Nation’s cultural organization UNESCO. Having suffered almost fifty years of occupation, Lithuania should have shown greater sympathy for the plight of the Palestinians and abstained. The government’s efforts to justify its decision have been singularly unconvincing.The vote in the UN as a whole was lopsided – 107 in favor of admission, 14 against, and 52 abstentions.
