Inappropriate reporting

Dear Editor,

The article “Poland’s exotics” in the columns of your paper (TBT Sept. 15) has saddened me very much. I’ll not assume my attitude towards the essence of the article, firstly because it concerns Lithuanian matters, and secondly as it is not proper for a diplomat to engage in polemics in the press. But at the same time I cannot be indifferent towards the scandalous comparison of present-day Poland with fascist Germany from the period of Hitler’s rule. In our part of Europe, so deadly affected by the aggression of totalitarian regimes, such a comparison has an especially insulting nature.

Your newspaper has been read by thousands of tourists and foreigners living in Latvia. I am convinced that you didn’t intend to hurt the feelings of Poland and Poles, country and nation friendly to Latvia and other partners in the Baltic region. Feeling strongly about that I hope that you will to be so good as to publish in the columns of your newspaper apologies for this – I do believe – unfortunate wording.

With best wishes,
