RIGA -- The Baltic Economic Forum has come to a close, with politicians and business leaders from throughout the region pledging deeper cooperation in the struggle to return to economic growth.

The two-day BEF drew a number of high profile politicians from the region, including the prime ministers of the three Baltic States, the prime minister of Belarus, and two EU Commissioners.

Latvia is this year presiding over the Baltic Council of Ministers, aan intergovernmental institution between the three Baltic States meant to ensure the continuity of cooperation. Estonia will take over the presidency next year.

The Lithuanian and Estonian Prime Ministers also took the opportunity to endorse his Latvian counterpart, Valdis Dombrovskis, in the upcoming Latvian elections.

"I would like to stress that, in the last year, the biggest hero of all was Valdis Dombrovskis," Lithuanian PM Andrius Kubilius said. "We were looking with deep nervousness at how Latvia would get out of the crisis ... What Valdis was doing was saving not only Latvia, but our whole region."
