Finland is an island nation

Finland must not risk being stranded in the post-flying era of transport and logistics and must invest in the planned Rail Baltica project linking Helsinki by rail directly to mainland Europe, writes Pekka Sauri.

Finland is for all intents and purposes an island. By any criterion of accessibility, Finland belongs to the European Union’s periphery. Finnish exports start their travel by sea and reach their destination by road. Finns make their journeys – both professional and leisure – to central Europe almost entirely by air. As far as environmental issues or international competitiveness are concerned, this state of affairs is nowhere near sustainable in the long run.
