Saving Ira

Ira, a seven-year-old Finnish girl of Indian origin, suffers from lymphoma, a rare and potentially fatal genetic condition for which she has been treated but which may recur. If the illness recurs Ira's only hope of survival will be a bone marrow transplant from a donor whose HLA tissue type (the Human Leukocyte Antigen) matches hers. HLA tissue types are inherited so the best chance for a match would be with a donor of Indian or South Asian origin, like herself. But India does not have a national bone marrow donor registry, nor are there enough registered donors of South Asian origin in Europe and North America.
