The Lying Men and Women of the Saeima

Last week, as readers of The Baltic Times probably know, Latvia’s parliament, the Saeima, rejected the candidacy of Prosecutor-General Janis Maizitis for a third term in office. The vote was 45 in favor, 47 against the candidate. That was bad enough, because Maizitis has done a great job for the past 10 years. Those who voted against him have said that he didn’t win enough convictions in the prosecutions that his staff had pursued, or that the man had been in the job long enough, so it was someone else’s turn.
