VILNIUS (BNS) - Lithuanian police raided the central headquarters of the unregistered Lithuanian National-Socialist Party in Siauliai on Sept. 12, following orders by the local prosecutor's office.

The party's headquarters, as well as the houses of some party members, were searched by the officers from the State Security Department and local criminal police, in order to investigate the allegations over fraudulent collection of signatures in support of the party's candidates for the forthcoming parliamentary elections.

Three National-Socialists have been registered to run in the upcoming elections at the Siauliai single mandate constituencies.

The party leader, Mindaugas Murza, told journalists that police had confiscated people's letters and diaries during the searches, and a PC, as well as various documents, photos of party's congresses and gatherings, election posters and campaign materials had been taken away from the party's headquarters and members' houses. He described the searches as an "attempt to destroy" his party and to prevent its members from running for seats in the country's Parliament.

The Lithuanian National-Socialist Party was denied registration for several times by the country's Ministry of Justice. The ministry refused to recognize the party and said that its statute fails to comply with the Lithuanian constitution and incites "ethnic discord."
