The Finnish Transport Workers' Union (AKT) and the Port Operators' Association approved a settlement proposal on Friday, ending a dockers' strike that began on 4 March.

Stevedores are to return to work gradually, with some terminals back in business the same day.

Esa Lonka, the government's labour market conciliator, had handed a settlement proposal early on Friday after 17 hours of talks between the AKT and the port operators joined by the Confederation of Industries and the Central Organisation of Trade Unions.

The strike has halted most of the country's foreign trade.
