Finnish Railways (VR) on Monday cancelled a dozen long-distance trains and about a fifth of the capital region's commuter trains, citing adverse weather.

The government-owned rolling stock operator advised passengers to prepare for further cancellations and delays.

VR added that many commuter trains would be cancelled on Tuesday as well, with long-distance services disrupted by further snowfall forecast for Tuesday and Thursday.

Delays of up to seven hours over the weekend saw some passengers, including children, sleeping on station floors.
