Social role of religion still significant

A recent study of co-operation between municipalities and parishes suggests religion remains influential in the Finnish public sector.

Valdemar Kallunki's doctoral thesis, defended on 12 February, focuses on the co-operation between Finnish municipalities and Evangelical Lutheran parishes. The results of the study highlight the significance of this co-operation, contrary to the secularisation theory connected to religious sacralisation. The acceptance of the appearance of religion in parishes and the level of support from municipalities was found to be high, and religious co-operation was more active than secular co-operation within all analysed fields.
