Twenty years ago, on March 11, 1990, the Lithuanian parliament announced the reestablishment of Lithuania’s independence. Soon after this, the State Security Department of the Lithuanian government was established. It played a crucial role in gathering information on the movements of the Soviet troops when Moscow attempted to overthrow Lithuania’s government in January 1991.
