Fewer Latvians tying the knot

RIGA – Fewer couples in Latvia are getting married – and those who are taking the plunge are waiting until they're older, according to research conducted by the Central Statistics Department. The decline in marriages has been sharp. In 1990, almost 24,000 couples were married while in 1996, only 9,634 couples tied the knot.The research also found that the average age of brides and grooms has climbed in the years since the country gained independence.
