The results of the recent European Parliament elections show that the people and the politicians of the Baltics are not taking their role in Europe with the seriousness it deserves. This can most obviously be seen in voter turnout. Lithuania, which has just come out of a presidential race, saw the second lowest level of voter turnout in the EU with a mere 20 percent. In Latvia, the turnout was significantly better 's but this is only because the elections coincided with local elections, which saw a hotly contested race for Riga city mayor.
