The uncertain future of higher education in Latvia

The restructuring of higher education was one of the major challenges of Latvia's post-Soviet reform agenda. The physical transformation of Latvian universities has been significant (albeit incomplete), as auditoriums have been refurbished, libraries restocked, and academic curriculums rewritten or created from scratch. In 1990 Latvia had ten state-financed universities, and two private colleges, but by 2007 there were 56 public and private higher education institutions.
