[Refers to "On 'Tourism Advice," Soren Christiansen, Letters, TBT #585, Dec. 6, 2007]
I think Mr. Christensen's suggestion for would-be tourists to Latvia (to learn a few phrases of Russian) is an excellent piece of advice. Apart from the obvious 's to avoid being identified as a weekend tripper from Western Europe, the Russian language is, like it or not, still the de facto lingua franca of this part of the world.
