Latvia: Living in interesting times

President Valdis Zatlers announced on Dec. 14 that he is entrusting former (long-ago former) Prime Minister Ivars Godmanis to put together a new government.  Last week he rejected the easy choice of nominating Edgars Zalans from the People's Party (TP).  Zalans would have received a vote of confidence from the Saeima with no problem, but he also represented the uncanny ability of the "elite" that currently runs politics in Latvia to nominate for high office either someone who is utterly inappropriate for the post or someone about whom there are very serious questions.  ...
