Early in the week of October 22nd, Turkey began shelling Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) positions in the north of Iraq following alleged incursions by the PKK into Turkey. NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer emitted a short denunciation of the activities of the PKK against Turkey.
