RIGA (BNS) - The Latvian parliament on Feb. 17 voted by a sturdy majority to drop March 16, the Latvian Legionnaires' day. The decision was passed 66-18 with seven abstentions.

MPs of Fatherland and Freedom/LNNK faction had submitted several proposals suggesting March 16 be designated to commemorate fighters against the communist terror, Soviet occupation and fighters for Latvia's independence during the WW II or Latvian Legionnaires Day.

The parliament rejected all these proposals.

Parliament decided to set March 16 as the Latvian Legionnaires Day two years ago in a move that triggered broad criticism from Russia. The criticism, also from the world's media, especially flared up after last year's march of the former legionnaires from the Dome Church to the Freedom Monument in the center of Riga.
