TALLINN (BNS) - Estonian skier Kristina Smigun finished second in this season's women's World Cup series following a crash in the final kilometers of the last race on March 18.

Smigun, who had lost the leader's yellow bib to defending World Cup holder Bente Martinsen of Norway in a 5-kilometer classical stage in Santa Caterina, Italy, on March 17, finished sixth in 10-km freestyle pursuit there on Saturday after crashing on a descent two kilometres from the finish.

Martinsen, the World Cup winner of 1999, finished eighth but retained the overall title.

A bronze in the event March 18 would have secured Smigun the title.

The 10-km pursuit was won by Julia Chepalova of Russia. Stefania Belmondo of Italy was second, and Kaisa Varis of Finland finished third.
