Rally driver dies in championship accident

RIGA - Latvian rally champion Gatis Vilcins died in his hospital bed on July 7, after suffering severe injuries when his vehicle crashed during the Kurzeme 2006 championship. Teammate Aivars Rudzitis was driving the car, but survived the accident with minor injuries. "This was an accident. Their speed had not been chosen properly," said Martins Dzenitis, spokesman for the Latvijas Mobilais Telefons team. During the fourth stage of the rally, held in the western district of Kuldiga, the team's car lost control and hit a tree on the side of the road. Vilcins was hospitalized immediately. ...
