A HOUSE DIVIDED: President Valdas Adamkus urged left-wing and right-wing parties to enter into a single coalition on June 5.

VILNIUS - The Social Democrats, the National Farmer and the Civil Democracy, the three left-wing parties in Lithuania's parliament, entered into a 43-seat strong coalition on June 5.

Meanwhile, the three right-wing groups of Homeland Union (Conservatives), the Liberal Movement and the New Union (Social Liberals) have also formed a coalition, made up of 47 seats.

There are a total of 141 seats in Lithuania's parliament.
President Valdas Adamkus urged a much larger coalition between left-wingers and right-wingers, and asked the Social Democratic Party and the Homeland Union to begin talks on forming a single coalition as soon as possible.

The government had collapsed on May 31, when the Labor Party decided to withdraw all its ministers from the cabinet. This followed the Social Liberals withdrawal in April.

Algirdas Brazauskas had resigned as prime minister. Adamkus will nominate a replacement within the next 15 days.
The prime minister will then have 15 days to present a president-approved government.
