VILNIUS 's An ongoing investigation into illegal weapons deals widened this week after an employee of the Defense Ministry's Second Investigation Department was detained for questioning.

Defense Minister Gediminas Kirkilas confirmed to the Baltic News Service that an officer who carries out intelligence and counterintelligence operations has been detained.

The detainment follows the arrest last week of a former parliamentarian, Algirdas Petrusevicius, and three other individuals. One is reportedly a sergeant of the Vytautas the Great Jaegers Battalian, who kept an astonishingly large collection of arms and ammunitions at his home.

Petrusevicius has reportedly admitted to engaging in illegal arms deals.

Petrusevicius was one of the volunteer founders of Lithuanian armed forces, participant of post-war Lithuanian freedom fights and recipient of a high state award, according to the Baltic News Service.

The accused could face imprisonment up to five years if found guilty.
