Vike-Freiberga returns language law

RIGA - In one of her first official acts as president, Vaira Vike-Freiberga asked Parliament July 14 to reconsider a controversial state language law that has been assailed as discriminatory by European observers and human rights groups.The law, passed by Parliament July 8, calls for the strict enforcement of the Latvian language in both the public and private sectors.
