A few years ago - when I was still living in Australia - I remember Latvia being in the headlines. Not for its economic or societal achievements in dealing with its recent communist past. Nor even for being accepted as a candidate in the first round of new EU expansion. No, if you asked the average Joe or Mary in Australia why he or she had heard of Latvia as of late, they would have said it was because of the Latvian-born Nazi that was hiding out in Melbourne.
