As an article in last year's The Baltic Times predicted, the British hooligans have arrived in the Baltics. After leaving their marks in cities like Prague, they have expanded and are now clearly noticeable in Riga and Tallinn. I personally witnessed their disgusting behavior in Riga last Sunday.
They are young men in groups of about 10 to 15 people and are usually in their 20's. Sunday they "united" and took over the main square in Riga's Old Town and gave one of their best performances. After drinking like there was no tomorrow, their behavior was shocking: they howled, screamed loudly, repeatedly pulled their pants down and displayed their private parts to the large crowds of men, women and children, who were in the center for the May 1 activities. Girls walking by got a large dose of harassment and rude remarks.
The police, who had been there earlier, did nothing (no surprise here) and left as the group got ruder!
Is this the sample of what is to come this summer, or will the police, British Embassy and civic groups nip it in the bud before the Baltics become an infamous and easy place to raise hell? Only time will tell.
