RIGA - Rietumu Banka has announced that it would appeal to the EU and possibly even international court to rectify damage caused by actions of the Moldovan authorities.

The bank said in a statement that authorities in Moldova attempted to close the bank's representation in Chisinau, an action that, together with unsubstantiated media reports, has cast a shadow over the representation's repute.

But on April 4, a Moldovan court demanded the authorities to provide more evidence to substantiate its position.

The representation received its accreditation at a local chamber of commerce three years ago, Rietumu officials said.

The bank said it is "taking care of its reputation and will defend it through all available means," adding that it will turn for help to the Foreign Ministry, EU structures as well as Moldovan and, if needed, international court.
