Shevchenko voted best player from former Soviet Union

RIGA - Andrei Shevchenko, who was named European player of the year in December, was voted the top player in the former Soviet Union in a recent poll conducted by the Russian daily Sport-Express. The newspaper said that the Ukraine and AC Milan striker was the unanimous choice among sports journalists in the 15 countries of the former Soviet Union. Shevchenko was also shortlisted for the 2004 World Player of the year award by soccer's world governing body FIFA.
