New Belarusian president proclaimed in Lithuania

VILNIUS - Since Aug. 27, depending on whom you talk to, Belarus has had two presidents. Representatives of the country's underground opposition signed a joint declaration in neighboring Lithuania declaring Semion Sharetsky the temporary top man.Sharetsky is the chairman of the Belarusian Parliament dissolved by authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko. Luka-shenko's term in office was supposed to end July 20, 1999. But in 1996, the same year he dissolved Parliament and sent Sharetsky into hiding, Lukashenko engineered a referendum that extended his term in office until 2001. Few countri...
