New Liepaja Prison opens with successful transfer of prisoners

RIGA - The new Liepaja Prison has started work on Tuesday, the Justice Ministry informed LETA.

All inmates of the previous Liepaja Prison have been transferred to the new premises within one day.

Accordingly, the old Liepaja Prison has been closed down but continues its full activity as a structural unit of the Prison Administration.

The Justice Ministry and the Prison Administration would like to thank the State Police and other services for their cooperation, as well as the citizens of Liepaja for their understanding regarding minor traffic restrictions in the city.

As reported, the new prison is for men only and for inmates from Kurzeme and neighboring regions.

The new Liepaja Prison will accommodate 1,200 inmates. The entire complex will comprise six different buildings. The total area of the site is 305,116 square meters, with a total planned floor space of approximately 37,400 square meters.
