VILNIUS – President Gitanas Nauseda remains Lithuania’s most popular politician, while National Defense Minister Arvydas Anusauskas comes in second, leaving Vilija Blinkeviciute, leader of the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania, behind in the third place, according to a new Vilmorus survey for the Lietuvos Rytas daily, published on Saturday.

Anusauskas first reached the No 2 spot in June and has held to this position since then.

Vladas Gaidys, the head of Vilmorus, attributed that to the continuing Russia’s war in Ukraine and the politician’s visibility.

“After the onset of the war in Ukraine, he came to the forefront and has used the opportunities of visibility rather well since that time,” he said.

According to the poll, some 57.2 percent of respondents said they had a positive opinion about the president (59.2 percent in June). Some 44.6 percent (45.4 percent) said they had a positive opinion about the defense minister, followed by Blinkeviciute with 43.4 percent (43.6 percent).

Ex-Lithuanian Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis, leading the Democrats "For Lithuania", came in fourth with 38.5 percent (37.2 percent in June), followed by Remigijus Zemaitaitis, leader of the Freedom and Justice Party with 38.1 percent (37 percent), and Speaker of the Seimas Viktorija Cmilyte-Nielsen with 35.6 percent (32.6 percent).

Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte comes in seventh in the ranking with 30.4 percent (30.4 percent in June) of the polled having a positive opinion about the leader of the government.

Social Security and Labor Minister Monika Navickiene with 29.6 percent (30.2 percent), Kaunas Mayor Visvaldas Matijosaitis with 27.7 percent (26.2 percent), and Ramunas Karbauskis, leader of the Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union, with 26.8 percent (25.5 percent), complete the TOP-10.

The survey of 1,003 people was carried out on July 15-23, with a margin of error of 3.1 percent.
