Moldova’s further integration in Europe depends on the its ability to meet EU conditions - Rinkevics

RIGA - On Tuesday in New York, during the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly, the Latvian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Edgars Rinkevics, met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of Moldova, Nicu Popescu, for a discussion on the bilateral dialogue between the two countries, regional security and energy-related topics, as well as cooperation in international organizations.

The Latvian Foreign Minister congratulated Moldova on being granted the status of a candidate for the European Union Membership. At the same time, Edgars Rinkevics underlined that a more rapid integration of Moldova into Europe depends on the fulfilment of its political commitments, LETA was told by the Foreign Ministry.

The Ministers also exchanged views on regional security, including the consequences of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Under the current crisis, Latvia has increased assistance to Moldova’s border guard service. Latvia also supports Moldova’s efforts of diversifying energy sources and supply routes to reduce energy dependence on Russia.
