RIGA - Minister of Justice Inese Libina-Egnere (New Unity, JV) hopes to put forward the cohabitation bill for same-sex couples for approval in the fall.

The Ministry of Justice has done "a lot of preparatory work" so far, so if a political agreement is reached by autumn, then there would be no obstacles to move the solution forward for approval in the autumn session of the Saeima, the minister said after yesterday's meeting between JV, the Union of Greens and Farmers (ZZS) and the Progressives.

Libina-Egnere pointed out that it is about the creation of a new regulation and that in this matter it is possible to follow "different paths", that is, there are different technical solutions for the adoption of such amendments. "Decent time" will also be devoted to discussions in this area.

The Minister of Justice emphasized that it is the responsibility of politicians to fulfill the verdict of the Constitutional Court that the regulation of cohabitation should be introduced.

The New Unity politician spoke critically about "one coalition partner", meaning the National Alliance (NA), which limits the progress of this issue with many ultimatums. Therefore, Libina-Egnere hopes for smoother progress in the possible expanded coalition.

The co-chairman of the Progressives group at Saeima, MP Andris Suvajevs, explained that the issue of cohabitation was not widely discussed on Wednesday, but the party wants to talk about it in future negotiations.

As reported, the ruling coalition currently consists of New Unity, National Alliance and the United List, but after this year's presidential elections, in which the coalition parties could not agree on support for one candidate, Karins has started talks on a possible broadening of the coalition by including Greens/Farmers and the Progressives.

The National Alliance and the United List object to the broadening of the current three-party coalition.
