TALLINN - Estonia will allocate additionally 1.3 million euros in humanitarian aid for Syria and the region, Foreign Minister Sven Mikser said at a conference on supporting the future of Syria and the region in Brussels on Wednesday.

The minister described finding a lasting political solution to the civil war in Syria as paramount and reaffirmed the commitment of Estonia to continue with the provision of aid, spokespeople for the Estonian Foreign Ministry said.

"For more than six years already we have been witness to the civil war in Syria, and it's time to put an end to this systematic violation of human rights and international law as well as the accompanying violence," Mikser said. "The report yesterday about the use of a chemical weapon in Syria further underscores the need to put an end to the civil war and bring war criminals to responsibility."

Mikser also said it is important to think through the post-conflict support for Syria in the phase of political transition.

"The Assad regime has failed not only in protecting the residents of its own country - which should be the primary responsibility of each government - but has itself systematically committed heinous crimes against its people. Therefore the situation of Syrian civilians and war refugees must remain under the special attention of the international community," Mikser said.

Estonia is set to allocate 1.3 million euros to provide humanitarian aid to alleviate the plea of Syrian refugees in 2018-2019. So far, Estonia has contributed altogether 6.8 million euros.

The Brussels Conference on Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region, co-chaired by the EU with the United Nations and the governments of Germany, Kuwait, Norway, Qatar and the United Kingdom, brought together over 70 countries, international organizations and civil society.

The Brussels conference builds on the London Conference on Supporting Syria and the region of Feb. 4, 2016.
