RIGA - Meteorological fall will end and meteorological winter will start in Riga next week, according to the Global Forecast System.
Meteorological winter in Latvia begins when the average daily temperature is below zero degrees Celsius for five consecutive days. According to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center, this has not yet happened in Riga as well as in some other parts of the country - mainly on Kurzeme coast - where meteorological fall therefore continues.
In the country as a whole, meteorological winter started on December 4 as the average temperature in Latvia was negative December 4 to 10.
Since December 1, the average temperature in the center of Riga has been below zero on only 11 days. The longest period was four consecutive days on January 3 to 6.
The lowest average daily temperature in Riga was minus 3.2 degrees on January 5, while the highest was plus 7.5 degrees on December 19.
According to the Global Forecast System, meteorological winter in Riga will start on February 4. From then onwards, the average daily temperature in Riga is forecast to remain below zero for quite a long time, with temperatures falling to minus 7 degrees on some days.
