RIGA - Martins Gulbis will be the new head coach of the Latvian women's basketball team, as the Latvian Basketball Association announced on Thursday.

Gulbis will combine working as the national women team's coach with coaching Latvian basketball club Jurmala/Betsafe.

Ziedonis Jansons and Matiss Rozlapa will be the national women team's assistant coaches.

Gulbis was born in 1991. He began his coaching after retiring from professional basketball due to health problems in 2011.

Gulbis has worked as the head coach of Latvian Basketball League clubs Barons Kvartals, Jelgava, and he has been Jurmala club's head coach since the fall of 2017. As a head coach, Gulbis has won the bronze medals at Latvian Basketball Championships twice - in 2017 together with Barons Kvartals and a year later with Jurmala.

As reported, the national women team's previous head coach Martins Zibarts stepped down after the team was defeated in the Round of 16 at the European Basketball Championship, failing to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
