Maajaam announces an open call for the international technological art exhibition Wild Bits

Technology and art farm Maajaam announces its second competition to find suitable works for the open-air exhibition Wild Bits.

Wild Bits is a residency and exhibition programme of technological art that culminates with a spectacular open-air exhibition in the summer of 2024 in the middle of the domed landscape of South Estonia. Wild Bits is part of the main programme of European Capital of Culture Tartu 2024. The first competition took place in 2022 and the current competition will be the last open call before the exhibition of 2024.

Maajaam is looking for art works that deal with the human condition in contemporary society and explore the points of contact between people, technology and nature. The exhibition aims to create new kinds of experiential situations that would broaden people’s minds. The artworks should withstand outdoor conditions and fit into the natural environment surrounding Maajaam. Artists of various disciplines from all around the world are all welcome to participate.

The artists selected will get a chance to take part in the three week residency at Maajaam in the summer of 2023. Organising residencies is in fact a main focus for Maajaam art farm. There is a newly constructed residency house and a separate workshop for larger pieces.

“The creative residency format is a great opportunity to take your project through some intensive development and to exchange ideas. We have completed a number of additions to accommodate the visiting artists and to offer them good working conditions,” said Timo Toots, the founder of Maajaam.

The works will be selected by a special panel made up of the organisers of Maajaam Timo Toots and Mari-Liis Rebane, artist Taavi Suisalu and the organisers of urban festival UIT Kadri Lind and Marie Kliiman. For the 2023 residency three to five projects will be chosen, each project will receive an artist fee and expenses on production, transport and housing will be covered to an extent agreed upon. Activities related to the Wild Bits residency and exhibition programme are co-funded by European Capital of Culture Tartu 2024, Estonian Cultural Endowment, Estonian Ministry of Culture, Estonian Centre of Folk Culture, Embassy of Germany in Estonia. 

Some of the selected artworks will also be premiered to Latvian audiences in summer of 2023 in Savvala, North Latvia. 

Projects can be submitted until January 27, 2023 and the results will be announced in March 2023.
