On Wednesday, July 24th at 19:00, musical ensemble Trio Tresensus will perform a unique concert in response to the latest exhibition at TUR, “Bundles of Persistent Thoughts” by Ieva Saulīte.
On Wednesday the 24th of July at 19:00, at their location on Tallinas ielas kvartāls, TUR will host the next installment of their Artist Talk Concert series. Featuring Trio Tresensus in conversation with Ieva Saulīte's exhibition "Bundles of Persistent Thoughts," this event promises to offer an engaging blend of contemporary art and music.
The Artist Talk Concerts are a key element of TUR’s programming, highlighting their focus on interdisciplinary exchange. For each exhibition, a musician or ensemble collaborates with the artist, resulting in an evening of music that reflects the themes and ideas behind the contemporary art exhibition. This approach not only provides new perspectives on the artworks but also creates new art inspired by these collaborations, reinforcing TUR’s goal of fostering innovative, cross-disciplinary artistic endeavors.
Trio Tresensus, formed in December 2015, includes Līga Griķe (kokle), Aigars Raumanis (saxophone), and Uģis Upenieks (percussion). This ensemble blends traditional and modern sounds to create unique musical landscapes, making them a fitting choice for the Artist Talk Concert series. Līga Griķe is a kokle performer with notable success in various international competitions. She has performed at venues like Royal Albert Hall in London and has received awards such as the "Young Musician of the Year" prize from the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music. Aigars Raumanis is a young saxophonist with multiple international awards. He has performed as a soloist with various orchestras and is currently pursuing his professional doctoral program. Uģis Upenieks is a versatile percussionist active in contemporary music festivals and classical concerts. He collaborates with numerous musicians and groups, showcasing his talents as a performer, arranger, and educator.
“Bundles of Persistent Thoughts” is the second exhibition in TUR's 2024 summer cycle, “Breaking Down Structures of Affection.” In this exhibit, Ieva Saulīte examines how personal experiences, cultural heritage, popular culture, and environmental influences shape our perception of the world. Her paintings and sculptures encourage viewers to consider these influences and their impact on our collective consciousness.
Saulīte uses material remnants found in and around TUR’s space to explore the unconscious. Her method, similar to Surrealist automatic drawing, has produced thousands of sketches over the years. From these, she has selected pieces that evolved into large-format paintings and three-dimensional sculptures. These works invite viewers to explore alternate realities and delve into the artist's subconscious.
The "Artist Talk Concerts" concept, conceived by TUR co-director Edd Schouten in collaboration with musical curator Robert Fleitz, has garnered acclaim for its unique and enriching experiences over the past ten editions. For the 11th concert in the series, Trio Tresensus, will explore the emotion and atmosphere of the exhibition with an innovative blend of saxophone, kokle, and percussion, a perfect complement to "Bundles of Persistent Thoughts."
About TUR
The ambition of TUR is to complement Riga's contemporary art scene by working closely with their selected artists to create high quality, curated art exhibitions. Collaborating with the distinctive characteristic of the space - which refers to both the traditional white cube and the building's industrial past - artists are invited to create new work and encouraged to experiment beyond what might be their conventional practice. Since it was founded in 2020, TUR has become one of the valued art spaces in Riga, organizing contemporary art exhibitions as well as concerts, performances, and poetry readings. Several of TUR's exhibitions have been nominated for the Purvītis Prize with Luīze Rukšāne's “Folding Lines” receiving the honor in the previous quarter. Last year “Voices in My Heads” by Rūdolfs Štamers and “Lapa uz lapas” by Maija Kurševa were nominated.
