RIGA - The cyber security solution of mobile operator Latvijas Mobilais Telefons (LMT) has prevented 1.095 billion cyber threats from 104.7 million malicious websites this year, the company told LETA.
Phishing and malware are the most common types of cyber threats, while C&C centers and cryptocurrency fraud schemes also pose a consistently high threat.
"One billion is a symbolic number that describes the reality of today, where every internet user has to take into account that the chances of experiencing a cyber-attack are very real," says Egons Buss, Director of LMT's Security Service.
He notes that during the festive season, it is also important to remember that tempting discounts can hide a fraudulent scheme and phishing attempts can be spread under the guise of greetings, with the intention of obtaining data or scamming money.
Buss points out that not only vigilance, but also openness and understanding of the victims of fraudsters are important in resisting cyber threats. "When it comes to cyber threats, residents and businesses alike need to realize that it is not a question of if you will be attacked, but when. That's why it's important to be open and share your experiences of being caught in a cyber trap, as it helps others to spot threats early and protect themselves from them," he explains.
As reported, LMT Group's turnover last year was EUR 308.608 million, down 0.5 percent compared against 2023, while the group's profit rose 6.1 percent to EUR 34.038 million.
LMT is 49 percent owned by the Swedish Telia Company and its subsidiary Sonera Holding, 23 percent each by Tet and the Latvian State Radio and Television Center, and 5 percent by public asset manager Possessor.
As reported, Telia has signed a memorandum of understanding with Latvia, Latvenergo, and the Latvian State Radio and Television Centre (LVRTC) to sell all its shares in Tet and LMT. The parties aim to sign a definitive agreement by the end of 2025, with the transaction expected to be completed in the first half of 2026.
