VILNIUS - A Lithuanian military helicopter on Tuesday delivered a donor's heart from Riga to Vilnius for transplanting, the Lithuanian armed forces informed.

The Mi-8 helicopter was sent to deliver the donated heart at the request of the Lithuanian National Transplant Bureau.

In the afternoon, the helicopter with the donor's heart and a medical team on board, landed at Vilnius Airport where the harvested organ was handed over to medics from Vilnius University Hospital Santaros.

The organ was delivered to Vilnius because there was no compatible recipient in Latvia.

Transportation of donors' organs is one of the Lithuanian army's peacetime tasks.
