VILNIUS - Lithuanian Culture Minister Vaida Aleknaviciene condemned a Russian attack that damaged the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, calling it a crime against the historical memory of humanity.

The minister described the strike as a brutal blow to Ukraine and a cynical assault on world cultural heritage, saying its destruction cannot be justified by any argument. Aleknaviciene said such actions demonstrate the aggressor's disregard for international law and civilised values.

Aleknaviciene said Lithuania joins the international community in condemning the attack, adding that the perpetrators must face justice as the destruction of cultural heritage during armed conflict constitutes a war crime.

According to the ministry, the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra is one of Ukraine's most significant spiritual and cultural centres. It is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List for its outstanding universal value and is also noted for its historical links to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

The monastery complex was damaged in an overnight attack. In recent years, the site has been at the centre of international media attention due to disputes over its religious affiliation and Ukrainian decisions to restrict the activities of a church linked to Moscow.
