VILNIUS - Suspicions of influence peddling have been brought against Alvydas Bieliauskas, the president of Lietkabelis, a basketball club in the northern Lithuanian city of Panevezys, a spokeswoman for the Special Investigation Service (STT) confirmed on Tuesday.
As a measure of restraint, Bieliauskas was banned from leaving Panevezys, Renata Kebliene told BNS.
Panevezys Mayor Rytis Mykolas Rackauskas is also suspected of influence peddling in the same pre-trial investigation.
Prosecutors and STT said on Monday they suspected that Rackauskas had agreed to accept a bribe of 3,000 euros from Lietkabelis' president in exchange for a promise to help the club obtain financial support from Panevezys Municipality and municipal companies.
Rackauskas has dismissed the suspicions as unfounded, saying the municipality has provided the same amount of support to Lietkabelis for the third year now.
A court on Monday suspended the mayor from office.
This is the second corruption investigation in recent years involving Rackauskas.
