TRONDHEIM (Norway) - The Latvian national men's handball team on Thursday, making its debut at the European Champions, lost to defending champs Spain 22:33 in their opening match of the tournament.
Latvia's top scorer was Dainis Kristopans with seven goals, while Angel Fernandez was the top scorer for Spain with five goals.
In the other group match yesterday, Germany defeated the Netherlands 34:23.
The top two teams in the group will advance to the next group stage.
Latvia will play its next group match on Saturday against the Netherlands, and conclude the group stage on Monday against Germany.
