RIGA - Latvia will join the statement on support for the principles of 6G technology, according to an information report prepared by the Foreign Ministry and approved in principle by the government on Tuesday.
On February 26 last year, the US presidency issued a statement that ten countries - the US, Canada, the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Japan, Korea, Sweden and the UK - agreed to base the development of future mobile technologies, including 6G, on a number of principles, such as the technology should protect national security interests, be secure, resilient and privacy-protective, as well as be affordable, sustainable and provide global coverage.
The Foreign Ministry noted that at a time when 5G mobile technologies are being widely deployed in countries around the world, work on the next generation of technologies is starting in parallel. One such technology is 6G mobile technology, which, by operating at a higher frequency band, will provide higher data rates and reduced latency.
Based on the experience and challenges encountered in the development of 5G technologies, the signatories have defined principles that should be followed in working on the next generation of mobile technologies. The ministry stressed that since some Latvian companies are also working on innovative applications of 5G technologies and the development of 6G technology elements, it would be appropriate to join the above-mentioned statement and invite the relevant Latvian companies to engage in international cooperation in developing new technological solutions with companies from like-minded countries.
The ministry explained that informal consultations have been held with selected Latvian companies during the assessment of the statement to assess their interest in engaging in international cooperation on the basis of the principles set out in the statement. The ministry also noted that the feedback received from companies was positive.
