RIGA - The Latvian Food and Veterinary Service has stopped 46 freight wagons loaded with moldy animal feed from Russia from being imported into the European Union (EU), according to information released by the service.

Representatives of the Food and Veterinary Service indicated that the cargo, which contained moldy beet pulp pellets, was sent back to the country of origin.

A cargo of mustard seeds from Kazakhstan was also denied entry into the EU as the Food and Veterinary Service found an excessively high level of erucic acid in the product.

Erucic acid is a monounsaturated omega-9 fatty acid found in oilseeds such as rapeseed, mustard seeds and their oils.

The food authority has placed a notification in the EU Rapid Alert System on both cases.
