RIGA - After lengthy negotiations, Latvia's Russian Union (LKS) has finally succeeded in opening a bank account in Latvia, which the party needs to receive the public funding it is entitled to, Miroslavs Mitrofanovs, the LKS candidate for Riga mayor, told LETA.
LKS was unable to access the public funding which it had earned with its electoral performance because banks refused to open an account for the political party.
Mitrofanovs said that the situation has been resolved now and LKS has an account at Citadele Bank. He added, however, that the bank thoroughly scrutinizes every transaction, which hampers the party's operations. Still, Mitrofanovs expressed gratitude that the issue has been resolved at last.
LKS had complained about the problem in court and the European Commission, claiming that its right to receive financial services have been violated. Since the issue has now been resolved, LKS has withdrawn the complaints.
