Latvia plans to strengthen cooperation with Egypt in medical education and exchange of expertise

RIGA - Latvia and Egypt plan to promote cooperation in medical education and the exchange of expertise, involving doctors, nurses, and residents from both countries, the Latvian Ministry of Health informed LETA following a meeting between Health Minister Hosams Abu Meri (New Unity) and Egyptian Ambassador to Latvia Naglaa Mohamed Naguib on Thursday.

During the meeting, they discussed opportunities for future health care cooperation between the two countries. The Ministry of Health named academic and research cooperation, the exchange of expertise among industry specialists, the development of digital health solutions, and the promotion of health tourism as the most promising areas for cooperation.

The meeting continued the dialogue started by both countries, which is based on the Memorandum of Understanding signed on November 11, 2025, between the Ministries of Health of Latvia and Egypt.

Prior to the meeting with the minister, the ambassador visited Riga East University Hospital (RAKUS), where she met with Aleksejs Visnakovs, head of the Emergency Medicine and Patient Admission Clinic, and learned about the clinic’s operations.

The Ministry of Health reports that the ambassador expressed Egypt’s interest in adopting the experience of RAKUS in organizing emergency medical care. The sides agreed to focus particularly on cooperation in emergency medicine so that Egyptian medical institutions can draw on Latvia’s experience to improve their services.

Cooperation is also planned between the university hospitals and higher education institutions of the two countries.

Egypt has also expressed interest in Latvia’s experience in implementing digital health solutions, which opens up opportunities for cooperation between the two countries in the field of information and communication technologies. The Ministry of Health notes that there is also potential for cooperation in the pharmaceutical sector. The discussion also addressed opportunities for cooperation with Latvia’s private sector in the organization and management of healthcare services.
