RIGA - The Latvian government and society highly value European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's visit to Latvia, regarding it as a demonstration of solidarity, Prime Minister Evika Silina (New Unity) emphasized at a press conference on Friday.
Silina thanked von der Leyen for her consistent and unequivocal support for Latvia.
The Prime Minister said that there were no signs that Russia intended to end the war in Ukraine. "Unfortunately, we know from our own history that Moscow only understands force," she said. That is why Latvia continues to strengthen its capabilities and resilience while weakening Russia, she said, reiterating that Latvia's external borders are not only the borders of Latvia, but also of the European Union and NATO.
Latvia will also continue to develop its military industry. As a good example of utilization of European Union funds, Silina highlighted drone production facility Origin Robotics in Marupe Region, which she visited today together with von der Leyen. "Latvia makes quality drones that help Ukraine defend itself against the aggressor every day," Silina said during the visit.
Latvia still advocates for further sanctions against Russia and Belarus, underlining that Ukraine belongs in the European Union. Led by von der Leyen, the Commission has been a reliable partner for both Ukraine and Latvia, said Silina.
Russia's war has impacted Latvia's economy, especially in the eastern regions, as investors are hesitant to commit funds there. "Ursula has always supported strengthening Europe's competitiveness, and we strongly support her in this regard, because a stronger Europe also means a stronger Latvia," said Silina.
Latvia has already allocated several hundred million euros to strengthen its eastern border regions and security. In addition, an economic development plan for the eastern border area has been approved, with more than EUR 640 million earmarked for the coming years. "However, it is important that these efforts are not only national, but also properly recognized at the European Union level," said Silina.
Silina and von der Leyen also discussed that this will certainly have to be addressed in the upcoming EU multiannual budget negotiations. "We agreed to work toward providing special financial support for Latvia's eastern regions," she added.
