RIGA - Latvia and Denmark share a common understanding and interests in matters of values and security, Saeima Vice Speaker Zanda Kalnina-Lukasevica (New Unity) said in a meeting with Danish Ambassador to Latvia Morten Jespersen.
During the meeting, Kalnina-Lukasevica thanked Denmark for its contribution to the leadership of the NATO Multinational Division North and for providing important military capabilities within the NATO Multinational Brigade in Latvia.
"We are grateful for Denmark's contribution to the security of Latvia and, at the same time, NATO's eastern flank. It strengthens our defense against the long-term threat from Russia. This summer we will again host the Danish military contingent in Latvia," the Latvian lawmaker said.
The Danish contingent is part of the NATO Multinational Brigade established in Latvia and led by Canada. The Multinational Brigade includes the forces of 14 NATO member states: Albania, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Montenegro, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, North Macedonia, Sweden.
Latvia and Denmark jointly lead NATO's Headquarters Multinational Division North, which was established in 2019 and is now fully combat-ready while continuing to evolve. Major General Jette Albinus from Denmark has been the commander of the division since 2023.
Headquarters Multinational Division North was established to improve the defense of the Baltic states and strengthen NATO's collective deterrence and defense by providing a command element in the Baltic region.
