MOSCOW – Many countries are staging provocations in the Baltic Sea region, so Russia intends to firmly defend its lawful interests in that area, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

"Naturally, there is currently a tense atmosphere in the Baltic Sea region due to the rather aggressive policy of European littoral countries. Russia will firmly defend its lawful interests in the region. Russia is a Baltic Sea state," Peskov told the press on Monday.

"But the fact that many countries are engaged in provocative actions there is also a completely obvious reality," he said.

Peskov thus answered a question as to whether the Kremlin views the first HIMARS firing exercise in Estonia as an attempt to escalate tensions.
