You have to agree that hammering out a true life-long friendship today is quite a marvellous - and unique? - thing.
Nowadays we just tend to be much more individualistic and, well, more egocentric and, well, more selfish than we used to be in old days.
I may argue that it is not necessarily always true, but this is something my octogenarian dad maintains when reminiscing about the past.
